Diktaean Cave
The birthplace of Zeus
The Dictaean Cave is where Titaness Rhea hid her son, Zeus, to protect him from his father Cronus who had the nasty habit of eating his children. This is also the place where the love stricken Zeus led princess Europa in anticipation to their union. The cave is located near the village Psychro, in the rocky northern sides of Mount Dikti at an altitude of 1025m. The locals call it Psychro after the village's name and it is one of the top visited archeological sites of Crete.
Start your journey from Stalida, Hersonissos or Malia and take the meandering road up to the Lassithi plateau and the village of Psychro. Wild aromatic herbs perfume the mountain air and the panoramic view will take your breath away. Follow the stony path lined with oak trees that will lead you to the cave entrance.
Vidiani Monastery
It is located on the Lasithi Plateau, near the village of Kato Metohi. It was founded in the middle of the 19th century. In its place there was an older temple, probably also a monastery. The founder of the Monastery was Hieromonk Methodios Perakis, who before taking refuge in Vidiani and starting to rebuild the ruins.
The monastery began to gain great fame and gather a large number of believers. It is located in a peaceful, green environment. Away from the noise of the city, yYou’ll have the opportunity to pray in the monastery and tour the Natural History Museum that operates in the same building complex.
Lato
Lato was an ancient city of Crete, the ruins of which are located approximately 3 km from the village of Kritsa. The Dorian city-state was built in a defensible position overlooking Mirabello Bay between two peaks, both of which became acropolises to the city.
Kera monastery - Karfi
The Monastery of Kera (9th century) is a historical and ecclesiastical monument with remarkable frescoes inside it, a place of worship and the center of the revolutionaries of eastern Crete against all its conquerors.
In the places of Karfi hill and Papoura hill (1.026m altitude), remains of pre-Hellenic cities and traces of a Minoan sanctuary of the Late Minoan period have been found. Because of its location, the village, according to older sources, was referred to as "Minitis", because in this place the guards were informed of the presence of the enemy while, in documents of the Venetian occupation, it was mentioned as Mesomouri.
Seli Ambelou - Stone windmills
The most remarkable set of windmills that survives in Crete today is located in Seli Ambelou in the Lassithi Plateau. It is situated at the northern entrance of the Plateau and it is the “trademark” of the area.
Today there are 24 windmills left (originally they were 26). Seven of them are south of the street that enters the Plateau and the rest are on its northern side.
All the mills are of the same type. These windmills were used by the people of Lasithi and other inhabitants of the area to grind the cereals. Its existence is mentioned since the Venetian era. More specifically the mills of Ambelos were transferred to this site at the end of the 19th century from the site Zaronas near the village Potamoi.
Homo Sapiens Theme Park
The museum-theme park Homo Sapiens is located at the 45th kilometer on the road of Heraklion – Lassithi Plateau and its founders are Manolis and Giorgos Petrakis. Homo Sapiens is a totally original museum in which the course and the evolution of human being since the times living in the caves until today unfolds. The fact that literally from scratch, and by having his mind as the only resource, the human being managed to become the dominant being of nature, is something that reveals the greatness of human spirit. This greatness is depicted in the Homo Sapiens museum.
All in all, the exhibits of the museum cover the period from 8,000 BC to 2,200 BC and in this way all the periods of human’s evolution are captured in an amazing effort to get to know the versatile and highly inventive thinking of human being and mainly the efforts he made in order to survive.
